10:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, Update: The City of Mountain View has declared a State of Emergency for the Cuesta Park area water main incident.
The emergency declaration was made on Saturday, April 26, and the City Council will ratify the declaration at their Tuesday, April 28, meeting. This declaration will allow the City to seek reimbursement from the State of California and federal government for expenses related to this incident, to the extent allowed by law.
Since Friday night (4/24/26), the City's Emergency Operations Center has been activated, which opens up more resources for responding to the incident.
Approximately 67 households remain under a "Do Not Drink" order tonight (view updated map below). The water in the affected area is turned on for toilet flushing use only.
The "Do Not Drink" order is isolated for the area near Cuesta Park. The water in the rest of Mountain View continues to meet state and federal quality standards.
In addition to flushing the water main in the street, City crews have flushed each affected property's water service to their front yard. City crews went to each affected household to provide written guidance on how to flush the indoor house plumbing and answer residents' questions. On Monday, crews conducted more comprehensive drinking water safety testing.
Restoring safe drinking water to the affected area is anticipated for mid-to-end of the week, pending test results of the latest water samples and approval by the State Water Resources Control Board. On Sunday, April 26, two of the five water samples came back positive for bacteria. The tests were for coliform and E. Coli. The lab has indicated that E. Coli was not present in the samples and that coliform was present in two of the five samples.
The water main incident happened on Friday, April 24, when the contractor, C2R Engineering, was performing water main replacement activities at the intersection of Cuesta Drive and Bonita Avenue.
