Following a recent collaborative effort and several partnerships across campus, the University of Minnesota Crookston's newly handcrafted eagle nest float earned a top spot among entries and won second place in the 2026 Ox Cart Days Torchlight Parade. The nest was meticulously built with twigs and branches harvested from the Red River Valley Natural History Area and carried the University's mascot, Regal the Golden Eagle, all while representing current international students with flags flown from different countries.
The idea for a float spawned from several group lunches and hallway meetings, and morphed into a committee of students and staff working together to beat the clock before the parade. Builders of the nest were UMN Crookston staff and student workers from the mailroom, alumni office, athletics, and facilities, while partners in banner design, supplies, and funding came from university relations, the agriculture and natural resources department, Northwest Research and Outreach Center, and the University's business office.
The nest's twigs and branches come from a variety of tree and plant species including oak, birch, and buckthorn, which were woven for days around a pallet wood base and chicken wire. Banners around the float's trailer read, "Join Our Nest - Soar Into The World" and "Small Campus. Big Degree. Global Impact.", along with University of Minnesota Crookston branding and gold fringe. The plan is to have the nest on display at upcoming campus events such as Welcome Weekend and Homecoming.
UMN Crookston is celebrating two banner years in 2026 with 120 years since its first classes began at the Northwest School of Agriculture and 60 years since the first college classes started. The parade float was just one of the efforts to help recognize the University's historical timeline.
