This Investment Will Help Provide Critical Infrastructure for a Community of 14,973 Residents
Plainfield, Conn., April 16, 2026 - U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Southern New England State Director Christopher Lyon announced the Plainfield Fire District will receive over $18.6 million to construct a 17,500 square foot fire station to serve the residents of Plainfield, Connecticut. The announcement comes during National Public Safety Telecommunicators week.
"During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, I am pleased to announce this critical investment in a new fire station," said Lyon. "This infrastructure upgrade will strengthen emergency response and help protect the nearly 15,000 residents served by the Plainfield Fire District. This project underscores our commitment to ensuring a safer, more resilient community for the people and families who call Plainfield home."
The investment comes in the form of a 40-year loan through USDA Rural Development Community Facility Direct Loan in the amount of $18,656,128. Plainfield Fire District's current fire station is no longer compliant with modern safety standards. The new station will fully meet and exceed all safety standards and will have dedicated decontamination zones, advanced vehicle exhaust capture systems, proper gear storage and cleaning systems, and properly sized apparatus bays. The fire station will be a cornerstone of public safety locally and a critical component of Plainfield's emergency response capability.
