Water Utility continues water main flushing

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

The City of Columbia Water Utility is continuing unidirectional flushing of the water distribution system in central Columbia on Monday, July 27.

The targeted area of the project - as shown on the attached map - is south of Interstate 70 to Rollins and between Garth Avenue and Highway 63.

Crews will be flushing the pipes between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Utility expects the flushing in this area to be completed in five weeks.

During unidirectional flushing, water is forced through a water pipe at a velocity high enough to remove mineral deposits from the interior surface of the water mains.

During this time, customers may notice cloudiness or discoloration in their water. The sediment is calcium bicarbonate (lime), which is used as a water softener. It is not harmful to consume and poses no health hazard. However, if discoloration persists more than a few hours, the City asks customers to report their concerns at 573.874.CITY (2489), and Water Utility staff will respond.
