Dec. 13, 2025 (Peoria, IL) As the snow makes its way out of the area, the City of Peoria Snowfighters are working to restore safer travel conditions on the City's main arterial streets. Crews will begin tandem plowing operations on many primary routes to clear lanes more quickly and efficiently.
Tandem plowing is a technique in which multiple snowplows operate in close formation to clear multiple lanes at once. This method requires extra caution from motorists. Drivers are reminded not to attempt to pass plows traveling in tandem, to allow additional space for plow drivers, and to remain alert to reduced visibility caused by blowing snow.
Currently, all roadways throughout the City are snow-covered and slick. Driving conditions are hazardous, and travel is not advised. Residents are urged to stay off the roads, if possible, and adjust travel plans accordingly.
Snowfighters will continue focusing on arterial streets through the afternoon and evening before transitioning into residential neighborhoods overnight. Residents are encouraged to utilize off-street parking when possible, as fewer vehicles on the street allow crews to clear roadways more effectively. No parking on emergency snow routes remains in effect.
As crews work through neighborhood streets overnight and into tomorrow, they will also contend with dangerously low temperatures, along with blowing and drifting snow. Snowfighters will remain on around-the-clock operations until further notice.
Before extreme cold temperatures arrive, residents are encouraged to clear sidewalks adjacent to their property. Keeping sidewalks clear helps ensure safe travel for pedestrians throughout the community.
Road conditions are expected to gradually improve this evening and overnight. However, motorists should continue to drive with extreme caution, allow extra travel time, and increase following distances. Use additional care when entering and exiting neighborhoods and remain alert to changing road conditions.
Drive cautiously, stay warm, and have a great night.
