As part of his official visit to the Kingdom of Spain, Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović held a meeting with the President and members of the Joint Committee for the European Union.
Deputy Prime Minister Ivanović emphasized that his visit to Madrid aims to reaffirm Spain's strong support for Montenegro's European path, while also contributing to the further strengthening of bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of economy, tourism, education, and infrastructure. He highlighted the crucial role of parliamentary dialogue and diplomacy in advancing reform efforts and bringing the country closer to EU membership.
In this context, he briefed the interlocutors on the progress achieved in the accession negotiations, the reforms undertaken, and the roadmap for the period ahead. "We have a clear vision of what we want to accomplish, and on that path, the political support of EU member states is of vital importance," Ivanović stated. He expressed gratitude to Spain for its consistent support to date, voicing hope that this assistance would continue-and even intensify-throughout the remainder of the accession process.
During the discussion, members of the Committee underlined Spain's full commitment to supporting Montenegro in its European aspirations. A representative of the Vox group praised Montenegro's progress, describing it as an "exceptional country," while a member of the People's Party highlighted that its future membership would bring added value to the entire European Union.
Participants exchanged views on the broader enlargement process, with Montenegro recognized as the most advanced candidate currently on the path to accession.
Ivanović underscored the constructive cooperation with the new composition of the European Commission, particularly the positive and open engagement with Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
Concluding the meeting, both sides expressed readiness to deepen future cooperation, especially through strengthened exchanges between the legislative bodies of Spain and Montenegro, with a focus on sharing experiences in EU integration and aligning national legislation with European standards.
