Sept. 24, 2025 - Denver Metro/Central Colorado - CDOT is making safety and mobility upgrades along key freight corridor

Commerce City - The Colorado Department of Transportation, along with Commerce City, Adams County, and other local partners, today marked the official groundbreaking of the Vasquez Boulevard Improvements Project. The effort will deliver major safety and mobility upgrades along the corridor between I-270 and 64th Avenue. The event, held at Eagle Pointe Recreation Center, brought together project leaders, elected officials, and community stakeholders.

"This project is a great example of how collaboration leads to stronger, safer communities," said Jessica Myklebust, CDOT Region 1 Regional Transportation Director. "Together with our local partners, we're investing in the future of this corridor to better serve Commerce City, Adams County, and the region."

The project begins with Construction Package 1, which will simplify the current eight-way intersection at Vasquez and 60th Avenue to reduce congestion and improve safety. Additional improvements will enhance pedestrian and cyclist access, accommodate future travel demands, and improve freight movement along this heavily trafficked corridor, which is traveled by over 40,000 vehicles daily.

"Since 1952, Vasquez Boulevard has been more than a road, it has reflected the hard work and growth that built Commerce City. It carried workers to jobs, connected small businesses with customers, and kept goods moving across our region," said Commerce City City Manager, Jason Rogers. "Now this $10.9 million dollar investment in Vasquez will deliver safer intersections and crossings; reduced congestion with new signals, turn lanes, and widened sections; and better access for customers, workers, and deliveries."

"This project represents the power of cross-jurisdictional partnership. By working hand in hand with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Commerce City, and our regional partners, Adams County is helping deliver long-needed safety and mobility improvements along Vasquez Boulevard," said Commissioner Lynn Baca, Chair of the Adams County Board of Commissioners. "This groundbreaking is a major step forward in ensuring our transportation network keeps pace with the needs of our growing community and is, above all and as is always our top goal, safe for all who use the roadways."

While today was the official groundbreaking, construction started in July and is scheduled for completion in early 2027. The contractor is Jalisco International.

The project's design reflects significant input from local stakeholders, including community members, businesses, and property owners. Their participation has helped shape improvements that meet community needs while also addressing regional transportation challenges.

• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.

• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
