PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 4, 2025) - The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) has awarded Rhode Island Energy (RIE) the EEI Assistance Award for the company's mutual aid efforts in response to a severe storm that struck Pennsylvania on April 29 of this year.
Presented to EEI member companies twice a year, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.
"RIE showcased true leadership when it stepped in to lend critical support to neighboring electric companies in their times of need-underscoring the importance of our industry's mutual assistance network. This assistance award reflects RIE and its storm response team's incredible commitment to the customers and communities they serve," said EEI President and CEO Drew Maloney. "America's electric companies and their dedicated workforces work tirelessly throughout the year to strengthen the energy grid and to restore power-and peace of mind-for American families and businesses after extreme weather events and natural disasters.
The powerful April 29 storm system brought heavy rain and strong winds exceeding 70 mph in parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The western and central portions of Pennsylvania were the hardest hit areas, with widespread tree-related damage that caused numerous broken poles and crossarms and downed power lines. In some areas of Pennsylvania, wind gusts were reported to have reached between 110 and 120 mph.
"RIE is honored to accept this EEI award for our efforts in emergency response assistance during the catastrophic April storm in Pennsylvania," said Greg Cornett, President of Rhode Island Energy. "This award highlights the commitment and dedication of our incredible employees who continue to live the values of RIE, providing support for our neighbors in need when they need it most."
Where RIE crews were deployed for mutual aid in Pennsylvania, approximately 350,000 residents were affected by an outage. During this event, RIE assisted Pennsylvania utility FirstEnergy with the support of 21 specialized field personnel, who worked to restore high-voltage power lines, playing a critical role in restoring power to thousands of Pennsylvania residents.
