City of San José Averts Strike, Ratification Vote on Tentative Agreements with MEF/IFPTE Expected to Begin Next Week
City leaders thank workforce for dedication and service to the community, and assure residents that there will be no disruption of services.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (October 9, 2026) - We are pleased to announce the City has reached tentative agreements with the City's largest unions, the Municipal Employees' Federation (MEF), and the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), which represents the City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP), the Association of Engineers and Architects (AEA), and the Association of Maintenance Supervisory Personnel (AMSP). These agreements avert a strike and the interruption of city services. Union membership is expected to vote on the tentative agreements during the week of October 12, with the ratification vote results expected on October 19.

Negotiations began in February 2026, with the City and union representatives engaging in a collaborative process to reach an agreement that is fair to employees while remaining fiscally responsible. The agreement includes the following key terms:

  • Wage increases of 3% in each of the three years of the contract with the possibility of an additional 1% in the third year if the City's General Fund meets surplus thresholds;
  • An immediate one-time, lump sum cash payment of 1% to help offset recent price increases; and
  • Safeguards pertaining to artificial intelligence.
We are grateful to our dedicated workforce who lead with compassion, serve with pride, and make a difference in our community every day.
