Budrys in a meeting with representatives of Belarusian civil society: we share a common goal – a democratic and free Belarus

On 12 June in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with representatives of the Belarusian democratic forces, civil society, diaspora, independent media, education, business and religious communities based in Lithuania. During the meeting, the Minister discussed the situation of Belarusian democratic forces in Lithuania and confirmed our country's support for the people of Belarus. It was emphasized that Vilnius remains a safe space for the activities of Belarusian communities.

During the discussion, the Minister addressed practical issues raised by Belarusian organisations related to the procedures for issuing Schengen visas, temporary residence permits and other documents and smoother integration of Belarusian citizens into the life of Lithuanian society. It was noted that all decisions are taken on the basis of Lithuania's continued strong determination to help Belarusians, while respecting national legislation, the European Union law and national security requirements.

"We share a common goal - a democratic and free Belarus. The current authoritarian regime in Belarus poses a threat to Lithuania's national security, as the country is a political and military ally of the aggressor, Russia. For this reason, it is necessary to continue the policy of non-recognition, isolation and sanctions at the EU level, while strengthening support for the democratic forces and people of Belarus," said the Minister.

The participants of the meeting agreed to continue a dialogue and cooperation in order to strengthen the Belarusian civil society, educational initiatives and resilience to disinformation and other common threats.
