Marquette University mourns the loss of Dr. David Martyn, adjunct associate professor of general dental sciences/prosthodontics, who died on Saturday, Jan. 4.
David was a proud 1989 graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry who returned to teach part-time at his alma mater beginning in 1991. He was a beloved colleague and professor who touched many lives as he shared his knowledge of dentistry with his students. Quiet and confident, he put patients at ease with his soft voice and depth of knowledge.
"Our students remember David for his patience and guidance as he would walk them through treatment plans and individual treatment procedures," said Dr. Brian Hodgson, chair of the Department of General Dental Sciences. "He always treated our students as junior colleagues, showing respect and offering encouragement, and I'll never forget his support in sharing tips and tricks with me when I first joined the faculty. Our students, faculty and staff will miss him dearly."
David is survived by his wife, Monica, and their son and two daughters. His family was his source of pride and drive, as he often shared stories of his children's many successes with his colleagues.
David was very active in keeping up with the latest in dental practice progress and was a member of the Milwaukee Dental Forum, the oldest and one of the most respected dental study clubs in the nation. He was inducted into the Xi Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the dental honor society, in 1998. He owned his private practice in Mequon alongside fellow School of Dentistry alumni, Drs. Nancy Larson and Robert Hafner.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 E. Capitol Dr., Shorewood. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Rita Church (Three Holy Women Parish), 1617 N. Cass St., Milwaukee.
The Marquette University community will remember David, his family and friends in prayer.
