Nearly 350 visiting secondary students and 33 teachers representing 13 junior high and high schools from across the state participated in the University of Wyoming's annual World Languages Day (WLD) competition Friday-Saturday, March 7-8.
WLD is Wyoming's state championship of foreign language study, hosted by UW's Department of Modern and Classical Languages. This year's theme was "Folklore."
Director Bénédicte Sohier, a senior lecturer in UW's Department of Modern and Classical Languages, led this year's event alongside 52 volunteers, including 11 UW interns, 12 UW student volunteers and 29 UW faculty and staff members.
"World Languages Day is not just about competition -- it's about connection," Sohier says. "It's about coming together as a community to celebrate our shared love for language and culture. And what better place to do so than at Wyoming's only four-year university, a place that embodies the spirit of exploration and discovery."
More than 250 students competed in linguistic competitions in five languages, featuring live competitions; and pre-event writing -- poems, short stories, essays as well as edited video; while 96 shared their artistic talents in a people's choice award art competition.
On Friday, UW interns led students on campus tours and facilitated six evening activities: tango, a visit to UW's Geological Museum, Chinese martial arts, karaoke, a planetarium show and Linguistic Olympiads.
For the main event Saturday, students participated in a poetry and drama contest, in which students competed in multiple categories depending on level and language. Additionally, there were 15 resource tables and 13 workshops offered, with students rotating through five of these. These opportunities generated excitement and engagement in a diverse array of languages, cultures and countries.
"I loved watching my students express their enthusiasm for language learning and culture through art, competitions, workshops, tours, crafts, shows and the list goes on," says Renee Fritzen, a Spanish teacher at Campbell County High School. "WLD is fantástico!"
WLD was supported, in large part, by grants from UW's College of Arts and Sciences as well as donations from UW's Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Arabic and Middle East Studies Program, Honors Program, Global Engagement Office and Department of Plant Sciences.
