Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on Trump-Putin Meeting Cancellation

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued the following statement after the White House confirmed there are now "no plans" for President Trump to meet with Vladimir Putin:

"I'm glad the White House finally pulled down the Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest, which should never have been agreed to in the first place. Putin is only interested in killing more innocent Ukrainians, rattling our NATO allies and increasing his leverage to avoid peace. President Trump must stop rolling out the red carpet for Putin and start standing behind Ukraine to end this war.

"The President should immediately approve further military assistance to Ukraine, and Congress must move forward on my bipartisan legislation to support Ukraine and punish Russia. Majority Leader Thune said the Senate would wait to move on sanctions until after the summit-well, that meeting is off. The time to act is now."
