Durbin, Coons, Reed, Rosen Meet With Chinese Ambassador To The United States

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) along with U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-DE), Jack Reed (D-RI), Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) met with Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, to discuss a broad range of issues including U.S. agricultural exports to China, the war in Ukraine, tariffs, fentanyl, critical minerals, and Taiwan.

"At a time when the U.S. and China have a number of shared interests, as well as areas of disagreement, I commend Ambassador Xie for meeting with us to discuss a variety of important issues," said Durbin. "I hope China can help bring an end to the war in Ukraine and also ease tensions in the South China Sea."

"I appreciated today's candid discussion with Ambassador Xie today and the opportunity to raise serious concerns on a number of issues in the U.S.-China relationship," said Coons, Ranking Member on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense. "China can and should play a more constructive role in a number of pressing issues facing our world, whether combatting climate change or managing the threats from Russia, North Korea, and Iran. It is my hope that we will continue to manage our competition responsibly."

"I appreciated the opportunity to have this important discussion with the Chinese Ambassador to express my concern regarding China's troubling relationships with Iran and Russia, during this time of heightened geopolitical tensions, while also exploring areas of potential collaboration," said Rosen. "While we have many policy differences with China that we must work to address, we have a responsibility to continue to engage diplomatically with countries around the world."
