ICYMI: Representative Derek Tran Addresses ICE Deportation Actions Across Southern California

Buena Park, CA -U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) held a press conference Saturday in response to recent ICE deportation actions taking place across LA and Orange Counties. Tran was joined by Gloria Alvarado, Organizing Director of the Orange County Labor Federation, as well as local elected officials.

Representative Tran discussed the inhumane nature of recent ICE raids that have indiscriminately targeted law-abiding constituents at their homes, schools, hospitals, and places of work and worship. Tran urged ICE to realign their focus to apprehending violent criminals rather than detaining innocent community members for the sake of meeting arbitrary arrest minimums set by the Trump Administration. He also addressed the Administration's misguided decision to federalize 4,000 National Guardsmen and deploy 700 active-duty Marines to demonstrations in Los Angeles without proper coordination with state and local authorities, and denounced the use of federal troops in the execution of immigration operations. Tran has previously statedthat turning our armed forces on domestic protestors exercising their First Amendment right will not enhance public safety and will only foment fear in our communities, and maintains full faith in local law enforcement to manage the situation in accordance with their training.

"Like so many of our neighbors, I have been deeply troubled by the recent raids that ICE has been conducting in our community," said Representative Tran. "Of course, I want our community to be safe. But what ICE is doing right now is not making us safer. Living in fear does not make us safer. Constantly wondering if you will be mistakenly targeted does not make us safer. Being denied transparency and accountability does not make us safer. We need ICE to conduct themselves with transparency and focus on violent criminals, not law-abiding community members. I will always fight to protect my community. I will continue to be a voice for the marginalized and oppressed. If you contribute to our country, if you are a patriot, if you are there for your neighbor, I'll be there for you."

"Workers are not criminals. Our communities are not full of criminals. This country was built by immigrants, and the amazing economy we have, making California the fourth [largest] economy in the world, is done because of the work of immigrants," said Gloria Alvarado, Organizing Director of the Orange County Labor Federation. "I am proud to stand here representing over 270,000 workers in Orange County, and I'm proud to say that we will not back down, that an injury to one is an injury to all, and we stand with our immigrant communities. Let's do it peacefully. Fear will not conquer us."

Representative Tran continues to closely monitor ICE activity across California's 45th district. On June 12, 2025, Representative Tran, alongside Representatives Gil Cisneros (CA-31) and George Whitesides (CA-27), sent a letterto U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth demanding answers regarding the deployment of armed forces to Los Angeles. During a recent House Armed Services Committee hearing, Tran pressed Secretary Hegsethon the militarized response to domestic protests and lack of coordination with state and local law enforcement to keep those community members who are exercising their First Amendment rights safe. Tran, joined by Representatives Cisneros and Judy Chu (CA-28), also led a letterto U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons condemning the agencies for unlawfully denying their entry to the Adelanto ICE Processing Facility during a statutorily-protected oversight visit conducted on June 8, 2025.

Since taking office in January, Tran's office has opened nearly 150 cases to assist constituents related to the adjudication of their immigration status with federal agencies.
