Scott Statement on December Jobs Report

As originally released by the Committee on Education and the Workforce, Democrats

WASHINGTON -Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after theBureau of Labor Statisticsannounced that the economy added 256,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate slightly ticked down to 4.1 percent from 4.2 percent. Over the past four years, the Biden-Harris Administration has ushered in historic job growth and steadily grown the economy. Since President Biden took office, the economy has added 16.6 million jobs. More jobs in four years than any President on record. And more jobs than any Republican President, whether they served four or eight years. He is expected to make history as the first President of the United States on record to not have a single month of seasonally adjusted job loss during his entire term.

"As the Biden-Harris Administration comes to a close, today's jobs report serves as yet another testament to the immense impact President Biden had on our economy. Four years ago, the economy was in freefall in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the gross mismanagement by the previous Administration. Even though the pandemic continued another two years, President Biden took immediate action to uplift working families and grow the economy from the bottom up and the middle out. These efforts, combined with Congressional Democrats passing the American Rescue Plan Act, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the Inflation Reduction Act, resulted in historic job creation and wage growth.

"Since President Biden took office, the economy has added a record 16.6 million jobs. Additionally, the unemployment rate has dropped from 6.4 percent in January 2021 when President Biden took office to 4.1 percent. During the last four years, we also saw one of the longest periods of unemployment below 4 percent since the Bureau of Labor Statistics began collecting this data.

"We will continue to advocate for policies which produced this record job growth, and we must build on the success of the Biden-Harris Administration."
