Repeat DUI Offender Convicted of Murder

DATE: October 19, 2026

CASE: Richard Newman (Case #25FE016766)

PROSECUTOR: Deputy District Attorney Toni Gonzalez, Major Crimes Unit

On October 16, 2026, Richard Newman was convicted by a jury of the second-degree murder of Nathan Thomas.

On August 21, 2025, the victim was driving through a green light at an intersection when Richard Newman ran a red light while driving 55 mph and struck the victim's vehicle in the middle of the intersection. The collision pushed the victim's vehicle onto a curb where it made impact with a traffic light pole. The victim was transferred to a hospital with a traumatic brain injury and multiple facial fractures. On September 11, 2025, the victim passed away as a result of his injuries. The investigation revealed that Newman's blood alcohol content was a .21% at the time of the collision. Newman had a prior DUI conviction and completed the Victim Impact Panel course offered by MADD, where he was given the Watson advisement, which is an advisement that driving under the influence is extremely dangerous to human life and might lead to a charge of murder if someone is killed as a result.

Newman faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in prison. Sentencing is set for November 20, 2026, at 1:30 PM in Department 16A before the Honorable Steve White.
