The hosts were particularly honoured by the presence of the Right Honourable Richard Wagner, Chief Justice of Canada, whose remarks highlighted the importance of the EU-Canada transatlantic bond and the values we continue to uphold together. The event programme also featured a special music tribute to our Ukrainian friends and neighbours, to their courage and resilience.

Europe Day events in Canada represent a true reflection of the deep, enduring friendship between the European Union and Canada, one built on shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, peace and multilateralism.

Every year on 9 May, Europeans and friends of Europe worldwide celebrate Europe Day or the Schuman Declaration, named after the famous post-Second World War French foreign minister. In his historic 1950 address, Robert Schuman proposed a new supranational model for Europe, a visionary idea of European unity and solidarity that marked the beginning of the European Union as we know it today.
