Showing Pokémon in a New Light
On March 5, 2026, Pokémon Pokopia launched on Nintendo Switch 2. The story begins when Ditto, the Transform Pokémon, wakes up in a world without any humans.
Players assume the role of a Ditto who has taken the form of a human. Living together with fellow Pokémon to gradually restore the abandoned town. Bulbasaur helps flowers bloom, Charmander lights campfires, and other Pokémon pitch in with their unique moves to help rebuild the town.
Games in the Pokémon series have typically revolved around collect, raise, trade, and battle. However, there are no battles in Pokémon Pokopia. Instead, it's a brand-new game that gives players the chance to share in regular, everyday life with Pokémon.
The title is a collaborative production between GAME FREAK inc., KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD., and The Pokémon Company. Drawing on its experience with sandbox games※, KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. led development based on an original concept from GAME FREAK inc. Meanwhile, The Pokémon Company produced the title, overseeing development support, creative supervision, localization, and promotion to share the game's unique charm with the widest possible audience. A Pokémon staff member recalls their first impression of the initial concept:
Sandbox game: A genre that offers a high degree of freedom, allowing players to enjoy crafting and exploration at their own pace.
"When this title launches, it will fulfill the dream of countless fans who want to experience life alongside Pokémon. I felt the concept had massive potential."
The Distinctive Tone of Pokémon Dialogue
One of the roles we played in this project was serving as consultants to ensure the authentic depiction of Pokémon while further highlighting their appeal. Throughout development, we monitored every nuance to ensure that the distinct personality of each Pokémon shone through, right down to their subtle gestures and facial expressions.
Even the lines that every Pokémon speaks have defined styles of speech and ways of referring to themselves. As we reviewed the extensive game text, our priority was making the dialogue feel true to a Pokémon's perspective.
A representative from The Pokémon Company explained the approach:
"For example, when reviewing lines that give hints to guide player progression, we aim for something more than simple explanations. The Pokémon's lines need to sound like how they would really talk. We continually fine-tuned the dialogue while keeping this perspective in mind."
A key part of the game that lets you experience this "Pokémon Perspective" is the conversations between the Pokémon. These casual and everyday interactions make the Pokémon feel closer to the player. Our team drafted the dialogue, and all three companies collaborated to create a wide variety of conversations. This aspect of the game was a hit with fans and became a major talking point on social media.
A Game For Everyone To Enjoy
While enhancing the fun of the game for our fans, we also embraced our role of welcoming newcomers to Pokémon. We wanted to make the title accessible for a broad audience, so we continually asked ourselves whether children playing for the first time would have fun playing it and whether the gameplay was intuitive for new players.
A representative from The Pokémon Company described the guiding philosophy:
"We all made a conscious effort as a team to consider things like reducing the number of on-screen button prompts as much as possible to ensure anyone would want to try it out, and easily want to keep playing."
Localizing Pokémon Pokopia for audiences in various countries and regions is another crucial responsibility we have. Following the guidelines established in collaboration with the development team, the Pokémon Group's overseas offices localized the game into their respective languages.
For instance, certain visual icons familiar to Japanese players would not convey the same meaning in other regions, so adjustments need to be made.
Similarly, some literal translations of dialogue between Pokémon would fail to come across as natural exchanges in certain parts of the world. The localization team carefully balanced the characteristics of the grammar with the game's elements in a way that players around the world can experience the intended humor and charm.
How New Encounters Broaden the Pokémon World
Centering the game on the concept of "living with Pokémon" has allowed us to highlight countless, entirely new aspects of Pokémon that have never been seen before in the series.
A Pokémon Company representative pointed out one such example:
"Splash, which is practically synonymous with Magikarp, was a move that was pretty much useless in previous games in the series. However, in this game, the protagonist learns it from Magikarp to gain the ability to leap over obstacles. I never imagined Splash could end up being such a handy way to get around!"
While the sight of Magikarp flopping energetically across land as it moves in this game is one such unique aspect of the title, in Bubbly Basin, a town which you can visit through paid downloadable content, Magikarp glides gracefully through the water, showing off the variety of behaviors Pokémon can have.
In the months since the game's release, players continue to share enthusiastic feedback, such as "I've discovered an unexpected side to Pokémon that I never noticed before!" and "I have so many new favorite Pokémon now!" For many first-time players, Pokémon Pokopia has served as an entry point, inspiring them to explore other games in the Pokémon series.
Living alongside Pokémon gives players a more personal, tangible connection to them, and hopefully inspires an appreciation for Pokémon they didn't realize they had. We look forward to hearing how these delightful new encounters continue to unfold in players' towns everywhere.
