The City of Greensboro will activate White Flag warming centers Friday, January 30, through the weekend in response to the impending winter storm. The following locations will provide shelter:
First Baptist Church, 1000 W. Friendly Ave., will provide 24-hour shelter beginning at 7 pm on Friday, January 30, through 7 am on Monday, February 2. The First Baptist warming center is open to single adults and families.
Glenwood Recreation Center, 2010 Coliseum Blvd., will open from 7 pm to 7 am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights (through 7 am on Monday, February 2) for women and families.
Interactive Resource Center (IRC) employees trained to work with special populations and coordinate services upon request will staff First Baptist Church. Glenwood Recreation Center will be staffed by IRC employees and the City's Community Safety Department.
The City's Community Safety Department activates White Flag status when the actual or "feels-like" temperature is 32 degrees or less for two or more hours. A White Flag alert can take effect when the forecast or current conditions include a winter weather event with freezing precipitation, extended below-freezing temperatures, and/or wind concerns, which may impact homeless encampments.
