Governor Spanberger Highlights Record Investments to Make Housing More Affordable, Celebrates Apartment Opening in Arlington

RICHMOND, VA - Governor Abigail Spanberger today joined Virginians in Arlington to highlight the Commonwealth's record investments to lower housing costs and celebrate the recent opening of Wholey Legacy Homes - a newly constructed 234-unit apartment complex.

Together with Senator Barbara Favola and additional local leaders, the Governor toured the new units that create more options for families at 60% AMI or below. The Governor also hosted a discussion with community partners about the long-term affordability of Northern Virginia's communities, where she pledged to continue her push to lower housing costs across the Commonwealth.

"Every Virginian should be able to find a home that meets their needs, fits their budget, and allows their family to thrive," said Governor Abigail Spanberger. "This beautiful new building is a testament to the important work being done to make that a reality, and I'm proud of the record new investments in our state budget to continue that progress. Housing is the foundation of a strong community and a strong economy, and we will keep working to ensure that Virginians have access to safe, affordable homes and the opportunity to build a better future."

"By expanding housing options right next to major transit hubs in Arlington, we are giving workers an affordable place to call home while giving Northern Virginia businesses access to the talent they need to thrive. This state investment ensures regional economies and communities continue to grow from the ground up."

Virginia's biennial budget includes nearly $100 million to expand housing development and help more Virginians find housing that they can actually afford to rent or buy. This investment includes record funding for the Virginia Housing Trust Fund, which is dedicated to creating, preserving, and supporting more affordable housing - like Wholey Legacy Homes - for Virginians.

"True Ground and its many partnerships, including with the Arlington government, has created a model that supports residents in achieving an affordable life," said Senator Barbara Favola. "This model should be replicated across the Commonwealth."

In June, the Governor signed a package of legislation aimed at cutting red tape that prevents housing development, protecting Virginians from hidden fees in rental agreements, and easing the burdens facing first-time homebuyers. Additionally, the Governor signed her entire Affordable Virginia Agenda aimed at lowering housing, healthcare, and energy costs across the Commonwealth.
