For one week this summer, Shriners Children's Northern California welcomed 20 high school students with one goal in mind: inspiring the next generation of compassionate healthcare professionals.
Held June 22 through June 26, the Summer Youth Academy gave 16- and 17-year-old students an inside look at the many S.T.E.M. career pathways linked to opportunities in pediatrics. Throughout the week, participants explored both clinical and administrative roles while learning firsthand about teamwork and innovation that define pediatric healthcare.
"The Summer Youth Academy is designed to help students see the many opportunities available in healthcare while giving them meaningful experiences with the professionals who make pediatric care possible every day," said Bonnie Davis, volunteer services manager at Shriners Children's Northern California. "We hope students leave feeling inspired and excited about the difference they can make in the lives of others right here in Sacramento."
From the moment students arrived on campus, they were immersed in the hospital environment. They met physicians, nurses, therapists, engineers, laboratory professionals, hospital executives and support staff who shared their career journeys and offered an honest look at the rewards and responsibilities of working in a children's hospital.
Throughout the week, students experienced healthcare beyond the classroom through hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations. They explored everything from diagnostic imaging and motion analysis to pediatric burn care, casting and infant assessments, gaining a firsthand understanding of the many specialties that come together to care for every patient.
"I was very surprised when Dr. Friel let us use real medical equipment," said Amelia, a Summer Youth Academy participant. "It was really interesting and only made me more passionate about joining the field of orthopedic surgery in the future."
Students also heard from hospital leadership, including Shriners Children's Northern California Administrator Kenny Pawlek, who encouraged participants to pursue careers rooted in compassion and lifelong learning. Throughout the week, they discovered that exceptional patient care extends far beyond doctors and nurses by learning from professionals in diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, engineering, volunteer services and hospital administration. These experiences gave students a broader understanding of the many people who work together behind the scenes to support every child's care journey.
"This opportunity is very unique because it is specifically designed for high school students," said Liliya, a Summer Youth Academy participant. "You feel like you're gaining true insider knowledge about life in a hospital as a medical professional."
The academy concluded with a celebration recognizing each participant's accomplishments and the curiosity, enthusiasm and leadership they demonstrated throughout the week.
By providing mentorship and hands-on learning with healthcare professionals, the Summer Youth Academy reflects Shriners Children's Northern California's commitment to developing future healthcare leaders. Programs like this help students gain a greater understanding of the many opportunities available in healthcare while inspiring them to pursue careers dedicated to improving the lives of children and families.
