Washington, DC - Today, the Supreme Court of the United States struck down tariffs implemented by Donald Trump. The Court ruledthe president cannot invoke the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to enact across-the-board global tariffs.
Until now, Trump has used IEEPA as cover to implement punitive and unpredictable tariffs. This approach to global trade has exacerbated the affordability crisis in the United States, punished the country's allies, and harmed American clean manufacturing competitiveness.
The U.S. economy has lost 88,000 manufacturing jobssince Trump took office, in large part as a result of sweeping tariffs and cuts to clean manufacturing investments, which has led the manufactured goods trade deficit to soar by $60 billionunder Trump.
In response, Sierra Club Industrial Transformation Campaign Lead Harry Manin issued the following statement:
"The Supreme Court has made it clear: Trump's wild and expansive tariffs are illegal. The country must instead take a strategic approach based on reality and rigor. The whims and grievances of the president are not stand-ins for congressional authorization.
"The Sierra Club has long stood in support of trade deals and tariffs designed to drive down pollution and ramp up clean manufacturing. When implemented thoughtfully and legally, tariffs and trade agreements alike can push foreign countries to attain environmental and labor standards that protect good jobs and support clean and healthy communities in the US and abroad."
