Celebrating Paul Robeson Day: April 9

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (April 5, 2026) - On April 9, we honor the extraordinary legacy of Paul Robeson. While an international icon, his journey was deeply rooted in New Brunswick.

Born in 1898, Robeson was the third African American student at Rutgers University. A powerhouse scholar-athlete, he graduated as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1919. He later achieved global fame in music and acting while serving as a tireless champion for social justice.

His memory is woven into the fabric of New Brunswick through several landmarks:

  • Feaster Park: Features a life-sized sculpture of Robeson.
  • Robeson Boulevard: A major city thoroughfare renamed in his honor.
  • Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts: Inspiring students through his artistic legacy.
  • Rutgers University also preserves his history through the Paul Robeson Plaza, Cultural Center, and Living-Learning Community.
As we celebrate Paul Robeson Day, we reflect on his profound impact and the enduring connection he shares with our City. From his time as a "star of Rutgers" to his life as a global activist, his spirit continues to inspire New Brunswick today.
