(September 9, 2025) Crews are beginning work on the new traffic signal at NE 57th Avenue and NE Halsey Street. From Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Tuesday, Sept. 16, they will be installing the new signal pole bases. No work is scheduled to take place over the weekend.

During this period of construction:

  • The traffic signal at NE 57th and NE Halsey will be turned off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Traffic flaggers will direct vehicles through the intersection.
  • Pedestrian walkways will be maintained.
  • Drivers should expect delays and follow all signage, flagger directions, and portable message boards.
  • The westbound TriMet bus stop at NE 57th and Halsey St will be closed.

Thank you for your patience as we complete this important improvement. PBOT has received many requests from neighbors and travelers to make this signal work better. These updates are designed to improve how the intersection functions, make it safer, and reduce conflicts between turning cars and people walking.

About the new traffic signal at NE 57th and Halsey St

When the new signal is turned on in early 2026, it will work differently than the current one to improve safety for both drivers and people walking:

  • The left turn from eastbound NE Halsey St to northbound 57thAve will have it's own green light phase. The green light for vehicles will coincide with pedestrians crossing on the eastern side of NE Halsey St.
  • Southbound vehicles will move at the same time as people crossing on the west side of NE Halsey St. That crosswalk is being shifted east a little closer to the intersection.
  • Vehicles entering the intersection from the south side of NE Halsey St will have a green light phase every other signal cycle.
