EPAC letter on west coast oil pipeline: Minister Jean

"Earlier today, the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada (EPAC) sent a letter to the Government of Canada outlining its support for the west coast oil pipeline and its members' anticipated volume commitments.

"EPAC explained that it anticipates many of its upstream oil producers will commit volumes to the pipeline, a signal of confidence from companies that produce more than 40 per cent of the country's oil.

"With one of the largest and most secure energy reserves in the world, Alberta is ready to deliver reliable, responsibly produced energy for years to come.

"Alberta's submission to the Major Projects Office laid out how this pipeline strengthens our country's autonomy and security, delivers real economic benefits and shows the world Canada is ready to build again.

"This is good news for people across Alberta. Every barrel that moves through this pipeline supports jobs on rigs, in the field and in the communities that depend on this industry, from Fort McMurray to the Peace region and right across the province. A stronger oil and gas sector means more opportunity for Alberta workers and their families, and a more secure economic future for the province.

"We welcome the notice published in the Canada Gazette starting the process to list this pipeline as a project of national interest, and we thank EPAC for adding its voice in support. Alberta will keep working with the federal government, private sector and Indigenous partners to see this pipeline built."

Quick facts

• Alberta has a goal of doubling oil production to eight million barrels per day by 2035.
• The west coast oil pipeline would carry up to one million barrels of crude oil a day along a route of about 1,250 kilometres, from Bruderheim, Alberta, to a deepwater port south of Vancouver, British Columbia.
