UNM Bookstores launches pilot program to expand affordable course materials for undergraduates

After years of planning, stakeholder engagement, and community feedback, The University of New Mexico Bookstores has launched the Course Materials Access pilot program ahead of the Fall 2025 semester.

The two-year initiative is designed to ensure Albuquerque campus undergraduate students have all their required course materials on the first day of class at an affordable, fixed price.

The program is already underway, with students able to view their required course materials for the semester in Canvas, UNM's learning management system, change their program option before the Sept. 5 deadline, and pick up their required print materials beginning Aug. 10 at the Central Campus UNM Bookstore.

At the beginning of this semester, all Albuquerque campus undergraduate students are automatically enrolled in the Complete option, which provides all required course materials for $279 per semester for the 2025-26 academic year. Materials include textbooks, digital course content, and course kits, like those used in art and architecture courses.

The program offers three options to fit different student needs:

  • Complete: Get all required course materials for $279 per semester.
  • Select: Purchase only chosen digital or print course materials for registered courses.
  • Opt-Out: Acquire all materials independently.

An integrated price comparison tool in Canvas helps students determine which option best fits their needs.

The Course Materials Access program builds on UNM Bookstores' decade-long Inclusive Access (IA) program, which has saved students millions of dollars by delivering digital materials at reduced prices. By the end of FY25, 80% of all course materials sold at the UNM Bookstores were part of IA. The new program expands affordability efforts with more flexibility and choice.

Faculty will continue to select the course materials and formats they believe best support their teaching, while students benefit from a streamlined, cost-effective way to obtain them.

The pilot will run for two academic years to allow for data collection and evaluation across multiple semesters. The UNM Bookstores will work with students, faculty, and staff to gather feedback on affordability, preparedness, and academic success before determining the program's future.
