Overnight Lane Closures and Paving Temporary Suspended for I-880 Capital Preventive Maintenance Project between Fremont and Santa Clara County

Published: Nov 19, 2024

Work will Resume Spring 2025

Alameda County - Caltrans is temporary suspending work for the Capital Preventive Maintenance project on Interstate 880 (I-880) between the City of Fremont and Santa Clara County. This project will extend pavement life and enhance ride quality along 90 lane miles. The project spans 11.8 miles in each direction along I-880, from Fremont Boulevard south to the Alameda County/Santa Clara County line, touching key sections in Fremont and Newark. This comprehensive project includes asphalt replacement, ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades, installation of pedestrian flashing beacons, guardrail upgrades, loop detector replacements, and improvements to traffic systems and signage.

Project Update: Paving Suspension Due to Weather
Due to anticipated low temperatures and potential rain, which would impact paving quality, Caltrans will temporarily suspend paving operations on I-880 from November 13, 2024, through Spring 2025. Paving is expected to resume April 2025.

Project Progress & Remaining Work

Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-880 have been fully paved and permanently striped from Dixon Landing Road to Mowry Avenue. Paving between Mowry Avenue and Alvarado Boulevard remains and is projected to finish by the end of summer 2025, weather permitting. Full project completion is scheduled for the end of 2025.
