Moulton Defers Congressional Salary For Duration of Government Shutdown

SALEM, MA - In a letter to Catherine Szpindor, Chief Administrative Officer at the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Seth Moulton (MA-06) requested that his pay be withheld as a Member of Congress until an appropriations agreement takes effect and the government shutdown ends.

The full letter can be read here.

Congressman Moulton has issued the following statement regarding his decision.

"As we enter a government shutdown, thousands of public servants - including service members, federal law enforcement officers, and civilian employees - are furloughed or forced to work without pay.

"While Democrats seek a bipartisan spending agreement that keeps health care costs affordable for all Americans, I will be deferring my own salary for the duration of this shutdown. Members of Congress should not be paid while the people we serve are left in limbo.

"If we can't be counted on to keep the government open, then we shouldn't collect a paycheck while dedicated public servants suffer the consequences."
