Back to School: Crossing Guard and Traffic Safety Information

As the new school year begins, the City of Redondo Beach and the Redondo Beach Unified School District (RBUSD) are providing information to remind students, families, and the public about recent modifications to the School Crossing Guard Program.

Several crossing guard locations have been adjusted based on traffic patterns, pedestrian activity, and staffing resources. As a result, some intersections previously staffed may not have crossing guards this year.

  • Families are encouraged to review their child's walking or biking route and identify the safest path to and from school.
  • Students should continue to use designated crosswalks and follow all traffic signals.
  • Motorists are reminded to slow down in school zones and remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists.
Full program details are available on the City's School Crossing Guard Program Update webpage. The current map of crossing guard locations can be found on both the City webpage and the RBUSD Safe Routes to School site.

Traffic calming and safety measures have been and will continue to be added at locations affected by the program changes. These enhancements include:
  • Painted curb extensions reflecting school colors, with school mascot stencils to be added early in the school year.*
    • *Painted curb extensions are not parking or stopping zones. California law also prohibits parking on crosswalks or within 20 feet of any crosswalk.
  • Speed bumps installed to improve pedestrian visibility and encourage slower vehicle speeds.
  • Increased police and traffic enforcement around school zones and high-risk intersections.
