Statement on Passage of Legislation Eliminating Financial Barriers to Critical Breast Imaging in Wisconsin

Susan G. Komen®, the world's leading breast cancer organization, issued the following statement on the passage of critical breast imaging legislation in Wisconsin, SB 264 or Gail's Law. Diagnostic and supplemental imaging are critical forms of breast cancer screening for some high-risk individuals and an important follow-up step in determining the need for a biopsy to rule out or confirm breast cancer. After years of advocacy, Gail's Law has been approved by the Wisconsin legislature and, today, signed into law by Governor Tony Evers.

"We commend the legislature and Governor Evers for prioritizing access to breast imaging by eliminating barriers to essential care, so that people with state-regulated health plans are able to receive their medically necessary diagnostic and supplemental imaging without fearing bankruptcy," said Molly Guthrie, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy at Susan G. Komen.

"Thousands of Wisconsinites require diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging every year, yet due to the high out of pocket costs, many forgo these critical services. Not anymore. This life-saving legislation ensures they can receive the breast imaging they require, likely leading to earlier diagnosis and better health outcomes."

"Komen will continue to advocate for legislation that ensures fair and equitable access to high-quality and affordable breast care for all."
