Chair and Professor of Communication Studies J. Dean Farmer and 2024 Campbell graduate Cailin Bailey recently published their article, "Do You Even Know Who You are Wearing?: Continued Communication of Hegemonic Masculinity in Hockey Fandom" in the 2025 volume of the Journal of The Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri.

Using a feminist critical framework, their project presents a rhetorical analysis of social media posts and televised commentary during sporting events that illuminate the taken-for-granted misogyny that proliferates in hockey and hockey fandom that demeans women. The article argues that all hockey fans participate in the disruption that feminist criticism offers so that questions of knowing "who you are wearing" can become moot.

Farmer has been a professor in the department since 2002 and chair since 2006. In addition to the current peer reviewed article, he also has published peer reviewed work in The Southern Communication Journal, Carolinas Communication Annual, Ohio Communication Journal, and Florida Communication Journal and presented over 30 papers at national and regional conferences. Bailey graduated in December and currently works with the Fayetteville Marksmen hockey team while she explores graduate educational opportunities.

Campbell University's Department of Communication Studies is a comprehensive undergraduate communication program with concentrations and tracks in broadcasting and electronic media, communication pre-law, converged journalism, digital and new media, generalist communication, health communication, public and interpersonal communication, public relations and corporate communication, sports communication and training and development communication. The department also offers accelerated programs in conjunction with Campbell's Master of Science in Public Health and the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. The department features fully equipped media labs and a television studio all housed on the Buies Creek main campus.
