Public Safety Wednesday January 14, 2026

Welcome back, Bobcats!

As we begin the spring semester, the Georgia College & State University Department of Public Safety welcomes students, faculty and staff back to campus. A safe start to the semester begins with awareness, preparation and shared responsibility.

Personal Safety Refresh

  • Re-establish safety routines after time away from campus.
  • Stay alert and limit distractions while walking, especially at night.
  • Use well-lit routes and walk with friends when possible.
  • Save GCSU DPS contact numbers in your phone for quick access.

Residence Hall and Apartment Safety Check

After returning from break, take a few minutes to:

  • Test smoke detectors and report any issues immediately.
  • Ensure doors and windows lock properly.
  • Never prop exterior doors open.
  • Keep heaters and electrical devices clear of combustible materials.
  • Identify emergency exits and evacuation routes.

Vehicle and Parking Safety

  • Check your vehicle after extended inactivity (tires, battery, lights and fluids).
  • Lock your vehicle and remove valuables from sight.
  • Use caution in parking decks and lots during cold or wet conditions.
  • Follow posted parking and traffic signage.

Cold Weather Awareness

  • Dress for changing temperatures and winter mornings.
  • Watch for icy or slick surfaces on sidewalks, ramps and stairs.
  • Allow extra time when traveling during colder conditions.
  • Avoid overloading outlets or using unapproved heating devices.

Fire Safety Reminder

  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Do not overload power strips or extension cords.
  • Use only university-approved appliances in residence halls.
  • Know your building's evacuation routes.

See Something, Say Something

  • Report suspicious activity, safety concerns or hazards immediately.
  • Trust your instincts - early reporting helps prevent incidents.
  • GCSU DPS is available 24/7 to assist the campus community.

GCSU DPS Commitment

Your safety is our priority. GCSU DPS officers are on patrol across campus and ready to support a safe, welcoming and successful spring semester.
