Rogers State University's Office of Student Affairs invites student volunteers to participate in a community beautification event this Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Slated for Monday, Jan. 20, the RSU Downtown Claremore Cleanup will serve as a community outreach to reflect service to others in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the day named in his honor.

"In the past, we've participated in the MLK Day parade in Tulsa, which has been wonderful, but this year, we wanted to do something that would give back to our own community," explained RSU Student Activities Coordinator Meg Thompson. "We'll be picking up trash, cleaning windows, going into businesses to see if they might need any small tasks accomplished - that kind of thing.

"This event is open to all students and student organizations. We'd love for any student organizations to participate, to come out and do this as a group project or as a means for any of them whose scholarships require service hours to earn some of those," she said.

Thompson said people interested in participating should meet in the Dr. Carolyn Taylor Center rotunda at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, to receive instructions and be put into groups before heading to downtown Claremore.

Cleaning supplies will be provided, and this event is expected to end at noon.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. Should a cancellation occur, students will be notified via their RSU student email.

Interested volunteers may sign up the morning of the event or by contacting Thompson at [email protected].
