Environmental Protection Expenditure (Statistics)

Overview

Industries spent RM3.7b on environmental protection expenditure in 2022

Environmental protection expenditure by industry players in Malaysia increased to RM3.7 billion in 2022 as compared to RM2.6 billion in 2015, with an average annual growth rate of 5.4 percent from 2015 to 2022.

Operating expenditure constitutes the largest share at 80.6 per cent, while 19.4 per cent was spent on capital expenditure.

Pollution management dominated the environmental protection expenditure at RM2,512.0 million or 68.1 per cent. This was followed by waste management with RM1,060.7 million (28.8%) and other environmental protection expenditure at RM54.6 million (1.5%).

The manufacturing sector continues to dominate the environmental protection expenditure in 2022 with the value of RM2,921.3 million or 79.2 per cent. This was followed by services sector with RM413.4 million (11.2%) and Mining & quarrying at RM171.3 million (4.6%).

Selangor recorded the highest environmental protection expenditure at RM995.6 million (27.0%). This was followed by Johor with RM876.0 million (23.7%) and Pahang with RM328.8 million (8.9%).
