Wind-Driven Vegetation Fire Quickly Contained Near Home Depot

On July 15 at approximately 4:15 p.m., San Rafael firefighters responded to a wind-driven vegetation fire in the marsh area adjacent to Home Depot, located at 111 Shoreline Parkway.

The fire occurred during a period of elevated fire danger, with strong winds impacting the region and Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) conditions in effect in portions of Marin County. Preliminary information indicates that electrical wires on a nearby utility pole (see red arrow in photo) may have ignited the fire. According to a PG&E representative who responded to the incident, high winds likely caused two power lines to come into contact, creating sparks that ignited dry grass at the base of the pole.

Fire crews quickly contained the fire, preventing its spread into nearby vegetation and developed areas. Fortunately, there were no injuries and no damage to structures or other property.

The Fire Department would like to recognize Home Depot for its proactive vegetation management efforts. The company recently completed a large-scale vegetation reduction project around the perimeter of the property. These mitigation measures helped reduce available fuel in the area and contributed to firefighters' ability to quickly contain the incident.

This event serves as an important reminder that vegetation management, defensible space, and fuel reduction projects play a critical role in reducing wildfire risk and improving community resilience during periods of elevated fire danger.
