The City of Greensboro is joining the towns of Davidson and Chapel Hill, in partnership with EarthShare North Carolina, in the Sustainability Showdown: A Local Government and Community Challenge, a two-week friendly competition designed to spark sustainable habits and celebrate community action.
From Monday, September 8, to Friday, September 19, residents and employees are invited to take part in the challenge by logging eco-friendly activities, such as conserving energy, reducing waste, and choosing greener ways to commute. Every action earns points, helping Greensboro compete for the title of Most Sustainable Community.
The Sustainability Showdown is more than a competition, it's also an opportunity to highlight how small, everyday choices contribute to a healthier and more sustainable city. The challenge also builds on the lead-in to NC Climate Week (beginning September 29), and aligns with Greensboro's broader sustainability efforts, including the Strategic Energy Plan, which advances energy conservation, emissions reduction, and environmental education.
"The Sustainability Showdown is not just about points or prizes-it's about learning from one another and discovering new ways to make sustainability part of our daily lives," said Dr. Shree Dorestant, Chief Sustainability Officer for the City of Greensboro. "We're excited to see residents, businesses, and city employees come together, share ideas, and inspire each other. Every action, no matter how small, helps build a stronger, more resilient community for all of us."
Whether you're a longtime sustainability advocate or just getting started, this competition brings neighbors, families, colleagues, and friends together to cheer each other on while making a difference.
The challenge begins on September 8, so be sure to register today at Sustainability Showdown. Participants can compete individually or as part of a team, and prizes will be awarded to top participants.
