The Tyler Public Library is expanding access to reading by becoming an official demonstration site for the Texas Talking Book Program (TBP), a free service for individuals who cannot read standard print due to a visual, physical, or reading disability.
The program serves people with lifelong conditions as well as temporary needs. All materials, equipment, and return postage are provided at no cost.
As a demonstration site, staff can help individuals learn about the program, complete the application process, and explore available equipment. The Library has a digital audio player and cartridge system available for hands-on demonstrations, along with enrollment materials.
A library card is not required to participate in the program. To enroll, applicants must have a medical professional certify their eligibility. Once approved, the TBP, through the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, becomes the primary point of contact for borrowing materials and ongoing service.
TBP offers access to more than 120,000 books and over 70 magazines in formats including large print, Braille, digital cartridge, and downloadable audio. Many titles are available in Spanish and other languages.
The program serves Texans of all ages. Teachers and parents are encouraged to explore the program for students who experience dyslexia or other reading challenges.
Residents interested in learning more are invited to visit the Tyler Public Library to try the digital audio player and receive assistance with the application process. Individuals may also contact the Texas Talking Book Program directly at 1(800) 252-9605, visit TexasTalkingBooks.org, or email [email protected].
Through this partnership, Tyler Public Library continues its commitment to ensuring that every member of the community has access to books, information, and lifelong learning.
