WARRENDALE, PA., (December 11, 2025) - The Automated Vehicle Safety Consortium™ (AVSC), an industry program of SAE Industry Technologies Consortia®, today announced the release of its latest best practice: "AVSC Information Report on Automated Driving System-Dedicated Vehicle (ADS-DV) Stopped Conditions."
This report provides a comprehensive taxonomy for vehicle stops, distinguishing between nominal stops (routine, planned events) and off-nominal stops (unexpected scenarios or system degradation). It also addresses triggers, stakeholder impacts, and strategies for managing these conditions safely.
"As automated driving technology evolves, clear communication and shared understanding are essential to earning public confidence," said Darcyne Foldenauer, Executive Director of AVSC. "This report helps the industry speak the same language about stopped conditions, especially those triggered by unexpected events, so we can manage them safely and consistently."
The report emphasizes the importance of concepts such as degradation and recoverability, while ensuring safety and operational continuity. By providing clarity on these concepts, AVSC aims to foster industry-wide alignment and accelerate the safe deployment of SAE Level 4 and Level 5 automated vehicles.
