California Federation of Labor Unions Overwhelmingly Supports Billionaires Tax, Prop 40

The Federation of 1,300 Labor Unions Made Endorsements in Over 150 State and Federal Races

Sacramento, CA - (Tuesday, August 4, 2026) - Today, the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO announced its overwhelming endorsement of Proposition 40, the one-time 5% tax on billionaires in order to fund Medi-Cal services relied upon by more than 15 million working Californians.

"Trump and his lapdogs in Congress cut healthcare to fund tax breaks for billionaires. California's over 200 billionaires should return those funds to California's hospitals and healthcare programs. This initiative will help save lives, protect thousands of good, middle-class health care jobs, and keep California hospitals open," said Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO. "The California Labor Movement has no sympathy for the billionaire tears."

The Federation also endorsed Xavier Becerra (D) for Governor, a longtime ally of working people and the California Labor Movement. Secretary Becerra is the son of a Laborer. His track record speaks for itself. As Attorney General, he created the Office of Workers Rights and Fair Labor and, in 2020, he was the first to sue Uber and Lyft to enforce AB 5.

The long-anticipated endorsements came following the Federation's 2026 Biennial Convention where hundreds of delegates from across California representing 1,300 public and private sector unions voted on Labor's endorsements for Assembly, Senate, Congress, statewide elected officials, and ballot measures.
