Second-Alarm Brush Fire Contained at People's Park

At 4:49 p.m. yesterday, firefighters were dispatched to People's Park in the 2800 block of West Clarke Avenue for multiple reports of a brush fire producing a significant smoke column.

Engine 4, serving Browne's Addition, arrived six minutes later and found the fire near the confluence of Latah Creek and the Spokane River. Crews discovered the fire had crossed a roadway and was burning groups of trees. As fire activity intensified, the incident was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm at 5:26 p.m.

A Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) helicopter arrived soon after and began water drops along the fire's perimeter. Combined aerial and ground efforts quickly slowed the fire's spread.

With support from the DNR, Spokane Valley Fire Department, and Spokane County Fire District 8, firefighters contained the fire by approximately 6:00 p.m., limiting it to about five acres.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
