"After nearly a year of bargaining following the University's voluntary recognition of the Union and with a desire to make real progress towards an agreement, NYU has proposed to the CFU-UAW that a mutually-agreed-upon mediator be brought in to assist the parties.
"At the 17th bargaining session, which was held on October 10, the Union made disappointingly little movement on many proposals, including a lack of meaningful responses to NYU's initial proposals on compensation and benefits.
"As a result, NYU believes the introduction of a mediator-someone impartial with a fresh set of eyes who can help both sides work towards an agreement-can have a positive effect on the course of the negotiations.
"NYU has been and remains firmly committed to negotiating with CFU-UAW in good faith and to reaching an agreement in a timely manner. A mediator can help bring the sides closer to reaching an agreement, and NYU hopes the Union will accept and bring on an impartial mediator."
