The City and the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture are transforming the intersection of State and Carrillo with vibrant asphalt art starting Monday, April 13.
Carrillo and State Streets will remain open during the two-week installation; however, a modified traffic pattern will be in effect. Work activities will include surface cleaning, painting, and installation of planters and signage. The City will monitor traffic conditions and safety throughout the duration of the project.
Modified Traffic Patterns: Carillo Street
Monday through Friday, April 13 to 24, 2026
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Intersection of Carillo and State St.
What to expect:
• Monday through Friday, April 13-24, Carrillo Street at State Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
• Art installation will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Pedestrians and cyclists traveling along State Street will be directed to use designated crosswalks.
• Weekend traffic will follow normal patterns.
About the State Street Asphalt Art Initiative
The City of Santa Barbara, in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture, received a $100,000 grant through the 2025 Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative. The program supports innovative public art projects that enhance pedestrian safety, improve streetscapes, and engage communities.
