Emergency Sirens Test – October 6, Potassium Iodide Distribution – October 15

SMYRNA, Del. - The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), the Delaware State Police, and Public Service Enterprise Group Inc. (PSEG) will conduct a quarterly test of the Salem/Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations Alert and Notification system on Tuesday, October 6 at 10:45 a.m.

The thirty-seven sirens within Delaware's 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone will be activated for three to five minutes, followed by an Emergency Alert System (EAS) test message on local radio stations. The routine quarterly test helps to ensure the reliability of the sirens used to alert the public during an actual emergency at the Salem Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Stations. The sirens cover an area north from Delaware City, west to Middletown, and south to Woodland Beach and are designed to alert people who are outdoors.

In an actual emergency, steady three- to five-minute siren tones would alert residents to an event at the Stations, and then be followed by a broadcast on an Emergency Alert System (EAS) station with official information.

Following the siren test, the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) will distribute potassium iodide (KI) tablets to residents within the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) on Thursday, October 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Delaware City Fire Hall, 815 5th St, Delaware City, DE 19706.

KI is available to residents replacing expired tablets or receiving them for the first time. Eligible individuals must bring a photo ID and proof of residency or employment within the EPZ. Expired tablets may be exchanged for new ones

KI helps protect the thyroid from radioactive iodine during a radiological emergency and is provided to Delaware through a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) program. Residents outside the 10-mile EPZ may obtain KI through their pharmacist or participating pharmacies.
