Oakland University hosts 11th annual 24-Hour Film Challenge

The Oakland University Film Program recently hosted its 24-Hour Film Challenge, an annual event that encourages OU students, staff, faculty and alumni to team up to shoot and edit a short film over a 24-hour period.

"It's become an important annual tradition for both the Film and Theatre programs," said Anthony Guest, associate professor of theatre at OU.

This year, the challenge ran from 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 to 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. Participants can use Film Program equipment and edit labs, or use their own cameras and laptops.

"The participants stay up all night shooting around campus and edit their films in the Varner Hall editing lab (room 228)," Guest said.

Each film must adhere to a list of requirements, including: film duration (two to four minutes), genre/theme (mystery-thriller or the 1990s), filming locations, the use of props, and dialogue (at least two lines).

When filming and editing are completed, the films are turned in by 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, and between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the films are watched and judged by OU faculty. A screening event featuring all the films is also held in Dodge Hall (room 201) on Oct. 12, and awards are presented to the winners in each category.

"We had another great year of the 24-hour challenge," said Adam Gould, associate professor of film at OU. "The filmswere creative and clever, which is tough to do in only 24 hours. What I was most pleased about was the variety of participants this year. We had freshman participants who are just getting familiar with campus alongside experienced senior led teams who have done this many times before. We also had a filmalumni team come back and participate, as well as an all theater majors team complete a film. The Sunday screening was a blast. Teams came out with their friends and family, ate popcorn, and enjoyed the movies!"
