Central Bank Governor Meets World Bank Regional Director

2025-07-15

The Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen (CBY), Mr. Ahmed Ahmed Ghaleb, met today July, 14 2025 with the World Bank delegation, headed by Mr. Stephane Guimbert, Regional Director for Egypt, Yemen, and Djibouti. The meeting took place at the CBY headquarters in Aden.

The two parties held extensive discussions on the latest economic developments in Yemen, with a particular focus on financial and monetary challenges stemming from the suspension of oil exports and the decline in official and humanitarian assistance. The talks addressed the resulting impact on price stability, the deterioration of basic public services, and the urgent measures required by the authorities to restore macroeconomic balance and sustain minimal stability.

Governor Ghaleb emphasized the critical role the World Bank continues to play in mitigating the effects of these challenges through both direct and indirect developmental and humanitarian support.

The discussion also covered the preparations for the launching of the Payment Systems Project, recently approved by the World Bank's Board of Directors. The project is designed to support the CBY Yemen in its efforts to modernize and strengthen the country's financial infrastructure and banking sector. The meeting also explored several additional initiatives the World Bank plans to implement across Yemen's developmental, financial, and service sectors.

The meeting was attended on behalf of the CBY by the Vice Governor, Dr. Mohammed Banaja, and sector deputies, and on behalf of the World Bank by Dina Abu-Ghaida, the Country Manager for Yemen.
