Workman's deep passion for supporting education and athletics was rooted in the values instilled by his family. Together with his father, he created the Schmidt/Workman Graduate Student Athlete Endowed Fellowship Fund in honor of his long-time partner, Kim Schmidt. The tribute reflects Schmidt's devotion to her alma mater and their shared passion for GVSU athletics. The fellowship supports former student athletes who are pursuing graduate programs after their athletic eligibility has ended, ensuring that financial need does not become a barrier to completing their degrees.
Keri Becker, director of Athletics, said: "Steve brought an energy and belief to Laker athletics that inspired everyone around him. His generosity was matched only by his genuine care for our student athletes and coaches. Steve helped elevate our programs in meaningful ways, and his influence will continue to guide us forward."
After attending Muskegon Community College, Workman earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master of business administration degree from Drake University. He was a partner in Filter and Coating Technology (FACT), a firm committed to helping customers meet product finishing requirements and advance indoor air quality solutions.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Workman was known for his generosity, mentorship and deep commitment to the communities he loved.
A celebration of life will be held on December 15 from 3-7 p.m. at Blythefield Country Club.
