Duke Street Land Use Plan Reaches Important Milestone Following City Council Discussion

For immediate release: November 2, 2026

The Draft Plan is live!

On October 27, the City of Alexandria's Duke Street Land Use Plan reached an important milestone, as City Council reviewed the Draft Plan, community feedback, and supporting studies ahead of anticipated Public Hearings in December.

Developed with input from more than 4,000 community members (like you!), the Draft Plan is the first comprehensive update to land use guidance for the Duke Street corridor since 1992.

The Draft Plan provides a framework to guide future growth and public investment over the next 20 years, focusing on new development, preservation and expansion of affordable housing opportunities, and support for local businesses. The Plan also recommends safety and access improvements for people walking, biking and driving, approximately 8 acres of new public open space, and nearly 4 miles of new proposed bike facilities.

Community input remains central to the process. City staff will continue reviewing feedback and refining the Draft Plan ahead of the anticipated Planning Commission and City Council public hearings in December.

Community members are encouraged to provide comments through November 13. Community Comments received by November 13 will help inform the version prepared for the December public hearings, although comments will continue to be accepted after November 13, (up to and including at the December Public Hearings)

The Draft Plan is available to download on our webpage (alexandriava.gov/DukeStreetPlan) and there are lots of additional ways to provide feedback:
