A roundtable of journalists and University of Alaska Fairbanks faculty members will discuss the media's role as President Donald Trump seeks to remake the federal government and punish perceived enemies in the press and judiciary.
The free public event will be held from 7-9 p.m. April 8 in Room 503H of the Gruening Building on the UAF Troth Yeddha' Campus in Fairbanks. Pizza and nonalcoholic refreshments will be served.
A key question in the discussion will be, "In today's political environment, where democratic institutions and the rule of law are being tested, what roles do a free press and the First Amendment play, and why does it matter?" The discussion will include audience participation.
The panelists include:
- Paula Dobbyn, who holds the Snedden endowed chair at the UAF Department of Science and Environmental Journalism
- Lynne Snifka, associate professor of journalism in the department
- Carol Gray, assistant professor of public law in the UAF Department of Political Science
- Gary Black, managing editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
- Dermot Cole, independent Fairbanks columnist
- Colin Warren, incoming editor-in-chief of The Sun Star, an independent student-run UAF newspaper
