FDNY welcomes latest class of probationary emergency medical technicians

The FDNY held a graduation ceremony for its latest class of probationary emergency medical technicians on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn.

"In this job, you will respond at all hours of the day and night, in every inch of this great city. There will be good days and there will be bad days," Fire Commissioner Robert S. Tucker said. "There will be patients you save and, sadly, those you cannot save. There will be lives you inevitably change because of the work you do, because of what you've learned-families who are grateful to you for the rest of their lives and people you will meet who will leave a mark on your lives, as well. ... The work you're doing is incredibly important to our city."

Acting Chief of Department John Esposito added: "In this department, we respond together-and everything we do is a team effort. ... This is not an easy career. It requires you to be ready for anything, in situations or conditions that are often difficult. But every day, you will be the ones who people look for when they call 911 for help. You will have the chance to save someone's life, provide comfort to injured or sick people and their families and maybe make their terrible day a little better."

Chief of EMS Operations Michael Fields told the graduates they are now the best of the best, adding: "When the alarm sounds and others run away from the danger, it is you who charges into chaos and brings calm, compassion and professionalism. Let us applaud these new EMTs for their hard work, their dedication and their commitment to their chosen profession."

The probationary EMTs trained for 18 weeks at the FDNY EMS Academy. The class includes three veterans from the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps. They will be assigned to units throughout New York City.
